the angels have no wings

they come to you wearing

their own clothes

they have learned to love you

and will keep coming

unless you insist on wings

~ Mercy by Lucille Clifton

Lucille Clifton is a gift. Her words are simple but beautiful and pack so much power because she makes you think. Every subject she speaks on isn't necessarily positive or glamorous, but her prose makes you feel the opposite. In a similar contrast, her poems about love can at times be dark, are not flowery nor superficial and not as literal as we may be accustomed to, but that is what makes her work thought-provoking, valuable, and timeless. #blackhistorymonth
